Easing Students into Academia: popular culture in the CBI curriculum more

Conference paper, published in Challenge in Learning:  helping learners realise their full potential. Ankara: Bilkent University, 2005.

Content-Based Instruction (CBI) is a popular method of instruction in English for Academic Purposes, not least because it helps students to meet the challenges of academic reading and writing in a second language by engaging their interest in the content area. This paper examines the use of popular culture in CBI, and in particular uses as a case study an English course taught in Bilkent University based around the Matrix films.
